The Plymouth GTX of 1971 :
The GTX and the Road Runner returned for 1971, but unlike the Charger
there was only one body style available, a two doors hardtop. It was
slightly smaller than the year before, and rode on a wheelbase one
inch shorter.
For the first time since its introduction in 1968, the Road Runner
used the same grille as on the GTX. The B shaped bumper was standard
in chrome, and colored bumper were available as an option on both
models.
Its new styling was curvaceous and very attractive. The hood's rear
edge rose upward to conceal the wipers. A new hood was standard, optional
was revised Air Grabber with a raised dome area with a cutout in the
middle that housed the trap door. The side markers were larger.
Mechanically the GTX was the same as the charger R/T, the 440 Magnum
and the 440+6 and Hemi were still optional. This would spell the end
of the GTX, and the Hemi engine.
The GTX officially died in 1971, in 1972 you could order it as a
package on the Road Runner, only if you ordered the 440.
