The Plymouth GTX of 1967 :


The Plymouth Belvedere GTX was introduced in 1967 for two reasons; first Plymouth needed a new image. Also, If the Plymouth Barracuda was aimed on the Mustang, they also needed a direct answer to the Pontiac GTO.

The Plymouth Chief Product Planning Manager new that names with 3 letters or numbers were popular. So he began to write down the letter "GT" and began going through the Alphabet. GTA, GTO, GTS and more were already taken. Nearly running out of letter he came across the letter "X" the first true Plymouth Muscle Car was born.

Based on Plymouth's stylish two-door Belvedere hardtop and convertible, the Belvedere GTX received a special grille and tail panel, simulated hood scoops, and "pit stop" chrome gas cap.

The first motto of the Plymouth was: Pure Luxury! And it was full of it. With, bucket seats, embossed vinyl, and in the options, tachometer, air conditioning, Radio, a center console, twin racing stripes, power steering, power brakes, power front disc brakes, Road Wheels,

The GTX was also fitted with the police car suspension and brakes as standard equipment. The standard transmission was MOPAR's three-speed automatic transmission. A four speed manual transmission was optional

The standard engine was the 440 Super Commando. And the only optional engine was the 426 Hemi.

The nickname of those GTX was: "THE BOSS", this name came from the drag racing and NASCAR, where it was nearly unbeatable.
