The SV1 Bricklin :
During the time of emergence of all the problems of security, to build
a car answering all the standards and the concerns of the moment was
a good step marketing.
It is this reasoning which Malcom Bricklin held while launching the
SV, "Safety Vehicle". It was about a car theoretically equipped
with a very good passive security (impact resistance) with a very
resistant frame, a large arch of security behind of the seats, oversize
side amounts and a framing of massive windshield.
Apart from this concept, the other originality of Sv-1 was its body
out of resin acrylic and glass fibre, coloured in the mass, inrayable
and always brilliant. If Sv-1 passed unperceived in circulation, on
the other hand, it created sensation when it the stopped and the passengers
entered or left it, with its gates "butterfly" comparable
with those of Mercedes 300 SL. .
The large front bumpers were, in their higher part, of the color
of the body and the retractable headlights. Aesthetically and mechanically,
Bricklin Sv-1, large half-compartment two places with V8 engine, approached
the Corvette but was far from having of it the reputation and the
distribution network.
The engine of origin was provided by American Motors but was replaced
by Ford after only 780 produced models, including 144 with a manual
gear box to four reports/ratios. The transmission, it, was of Chrysler
origin.
All the following models, with mechanics Ford, V8 of 5 752 Cm3 223
horses, were exclusively equipped with automatic transmission, Ford
origin also.
In September 1975, the activity ceased. 2 897 cars had been produced.
Even if it did not leave an imperishable memory, Bricklin is despite
everything a interesting case insofar as, in the United States, only
the "whimsical" craftsmen have a small market. Previously,
Preston Tucker had tried to launch a mass-production car. But vis-a-vis
mastodons like "General Motors, Chrysler and Ford, such bets
concern the impossible one.
